SCG Paper launches Comprehensive Agricultural Relations Efficiency Programme

Aiming at promoting eucalyptus as high-income economic crop

May 19, 2011 – SCG Paper launched the Comprehensive Agricultural Relations Efficiency Programme (C-A-R-E) along with powerful success secrets in generating high yields and income of over Baht 8,000 per harvested rai every four years, with aim to captivate eucalyptus farmers and ride on the increasing demand for eucalyptus in the next five years.

Mr. Joompot Tanmanee, Managing Director, the Siam Forestry Co., Ltd. in SCG Paper said that “We introduce the Comprehensive Agricultural Relations Efficiency Programmne or C-A-R-E with objective to promote eucalyptus plantation among Thai farmers. Eucalyptus is a fast and easy-growing tree, requires little care and adjusts well to rapidly changing climates, making it an ideal crop at the present time where natural hazards frequently occur. Moreover, planting eucalyptus needs small investment and minimal workforce while generating constant yield and regular income for growers therefore giving better returns on investment. SCG Paper strives to promote eucalyptus as an alternative economic crop for Thai farmers as supplementary income source especially while their main crop suffers price fluctuations. In addition, eucalyptus helps increase plantation productivity as planting it in conjunction with main crop will reduce risks from pests.”

SCG Paper’s exclusive Comprehensive Agricultural Relations Efficiency Programme provides support to its member farmers in three phases, as follows:

Pre-cultivation support

  • Siam Forestry’s sales team will analyze soil conditions and choose most suitable eucalyptus species for different sites
  • Measure and calculate product and forecast yield at the time of harvest, as well as give investment profit analysis
  • Give advice on plantation management, and instructions on basic planting and soil preparation

During cultivation support

  • Team of specialists help choose formula of fertilize suitable for the site and plan plantation management for best productivity and profitability
  • Provide random follow-up growth and progress annually and offer organic fertilizer credit scheme for small farmers and supplemental organic fertilizer for large scale farmers with at least 20-rai plot of land.
  • Regular seminar to give practical knowledge to farmers

Post- cultivation support

  • Offer free tree cutting, value estimation and pricing services
  • Farmer members who voluntarily ship the produce to Siam Forestry’s factory will receive special queue for sending Eucalyptus to the plant
  • For more convenience of farmer members, SCG Paper will consider setting up dedicated product purchasing center in the areas with high number of farmer members

Eucalyptus is a fast growing tree and needs minimal care, just like the saying - simply sow the seeds and leave it to the hands of Mother Nature. However, gaining excellent yield from eucalyptus plantation requires three following major factors:

  1. Good soil – a soil in flat areas, preferably a well-drained sandy soil with a pH balance between 6 - 7.
  2. Excellent eucalyptus species – which are able to endure all kind of climate of both dry and rainy seasons, give high yield, and are resistant to a variety of pests and diseases.  SCG Paper’s research and development team has recently been very successful in developing new H4 eucalyptus species, a hybrid of Camaldulensis and Erophylla, which generates high yields, produces dense and heavy wood, and is suitable to the climate in the Northeast, West, and Lower North. These are target areas of eucalyptus plantation promotion.
  3. Efficient management – eucalyptus requires small amount of fertilizer. Use chemical fertilizer in mixture with organic fertilizer. Chemical fertilizer gives all nutrients required while organic fertilizer contains bacteria which help boost digestive system.  Apply small amounts of fertilizer on a regular basis.

Dr. Boonwong Thaiutsa, Former Dean of Faculty of Forestry, Lecturer of the Department of Silviculture, Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University, and Forestry Director, the Royal Project Foundation, also introduced the concept of ‘Silviculture’ in eucalyptus plantation to help sustain yield and thus generate constant income. Silviculture is the art and science of growing and tending forest crops from the stage of planting, fertilizing, routine practice of raking leaves to prevent fire and harvest planning.

  • First year – after sprouting of eucalyptus, regular removal of weeds around the trees and application of fertilizer are required.  Raking the plantation using bulldozer to clear up space between trees once during year end to remove weeds and prevent fire.
  • 2nd – 3rd year (ready for harvest) – Raking out weeds is required once or twice a year. Application of fertilizer is required once a year. Raking the plantation using bulldozer as fire prevention is required once a year during the dry season.

As a token of encouragement and appreciation to dedicated eucalyptus farmer members, SCG Paper also hosted an award presentation ceremony titling SCG Paper Best Eucalyptus Farmer Member Award 2011. The awards, judged by a panel of professors from the Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University, are given to eucalyptus farmers who are capable of managing their plantation in accordance with the silviculture system and successful in generating excellent yield. The awards comprised two categories:  Best Member of the Year (for large and small farm) and Best Member of Special Development Areas (6 awards). Apart from being granted a commemorative trophy, the award winners also received other special offers.

Mr. Thanasok Dissalung, the winner of Best Eucalyptus Farmer Member of the Year 2011 for large farm revealed that “The most importance thing, eucalyptus needs responsiveness from farmer. Furthermore, plant-holder must make an effort to create new plan pattern, and always provide the best carefulness for the eucalyptus.”

Mr.Joompot forecasts that the global demand for eucalyptus will continue to grow in the next five years due to the increasing paper consumption in both domestic and international markets at an average rate of 13% annually. Eucalyptus is also gaining higher market price in the future. Recently the Ministry of Energy launched the Alternative Energy Pilot Project using biomass in local community of which eucalyptus in one the fuel source.
